Three purple grackles, just before dawn
flew to my house and sat on my lawn.
Three purple grackles perched in my tree
and looked through my bedroom window at me.
Three purple grackles outside my front door
listened to my footsteps as I paced the floor.
Three purple grackles at eventide
flew at me when I walked outside.
Three purple grackles landed on my head,
tore and pecked at me until I was dead.
Three purple grackles on my funeral day
followed my hearse as it drove away.
Three purple grackles won't leave me in peace
as they circle my grave without surcease. - Jeff Barnes
