NaPoWrimo 2019, Day 10

Todays's prompt is to write a poem that starts from a regional phrase. preferably one that describes a weather phenomenon. There is a Welsh expression that says, "Mae hi'n bwrw hen wragedd a ffyn,"
which means, "It's raining old ladies and sticks."  I thought that was a sufficiently weird expression to inspire a poem.

Old Ladies and Sticks

It was raining old ladies and sticks
and the evergreen trees turned red.
The sun disappeared from the sky.
In its place was a glowing lion's head.

A policeman grew an extra pair of ears.
A truck driver grew an extra mouth.
The penguins all migrated northward
and the polar bears all went south.

The fish started climbing trees
and the daisies began to sing.
Pumpkin patches yielded marshmallows
and the coyotes all grew wings.

You and I sat in a rowboat
in a lake that turned into red Jell-o.
Two hippopotamuses waltzed on the shore
while an octopus played a cello.

At five minutes to midnight the moon came out,
wearing a top hat and looking quite formal.
He winked an eye and smiled at us
and said, "Welcome to the new normal!" - Jeff Barnes
